Modern architecture can be considered as the general name of all the creative unique architectural movements that oppose the eclectic architecture of the 19th century. Mies van der Rohe, (March 27, 1886 – August 17, 1969) was one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. He strove to create a flowing open space architecture style with minimal structural framework and called his buildings “skin and bones architecture”.
This approach leds to increase the number of high rise buildings that consist of structural frame systems with long spans, also thanks to developed technology. The Skin of the Mies van der Rohe’s “skin and bones architecture” definition describes curtain wall systems that are applied to many of buildings today.
Façade structure (skin) is a non-structural construction mostly and transfers the external impact loads and its self weight to the premier structure (to bones). One another significant mission of the skin is to separate the exterior and interior air conditions. Special functional elements with thermal insulation and sun protection are applied to buildings today. Especially glass has become a material that has gained high insulation and sun protection aspects thanks to developed technology and used on a large scale in many projects today.
Energy efficiency has become a significant issue in this century that economies have been built on a fast consumption strategy. To define the connection detail between envelope and premier structure has a big importance, in order to have an energy efficient building.
Wrong detailed connections can cause important energy leakages. Therefore, to design the envelope in accordance with façade engineering and building physics principles is significant.
In light of the foregoing, as FDF Building Envelope Consultants our mission; to define external impact loads correctly, to dimension all façade elements safely and economically, to prepare the principle drawings which provide maximum energy efficiency for the building and fit to building physics and façade engineering principles, and be sure that applicaiton will be done as planned.
